We Need Help to a Hairy Problem

Eco-conscious stylist Dayna Cakebread is looking for solution to hairy problem!

One of the biggest waste issues in the salon industry is HAIR. There are over 1,000 salons in Portland (…now multiply this by every city in the world!). There must be some constructive use for all this hair!

Here are some of the trends and ideas I’ve already researched:

For some time I had been sending my hair clippings to an organization called “Matter of Trust”. This group wove hair clippings into absorbent mats used to help clean up oil spills in oceans, lakes and rivers. Unfortunately, this organization lost their storage location for hair clippings, and they are currently not accepting donated hair.

Another potential application is in gardening… I’ve heard that human hair, due to its scent, deters insects and animals when placed around plants and growing vegetables. I have approached a few organizers of nearby garden collectives, but I’ve been told it’s too difficult to reach consensus between those in favor of using the hair and those who are grossed out by human hair.

There must be some good way to reuse this hair… it is an issue in every community!
